Problem Note 44979: CONTRAST with more rows than model parameters causes abnormal GENMOD termination or crash of SAS

DetailsAboutRate It

If you specify the CLASS statement in PROC GENMOD with parameterization other than GLM (such as PARAM=REF or PARAM=EFFECT), and if you also specify a CONTRAST statement without the WALD option, which has more rows than nonredundant model parameters, then GENMOD will terminate abnormally (overflow, segmentation violation, etc.) or possibly cause SAS to terminate. Note that nonredundant model parameters means parameters which have nonzero degrees of freedom.

To avoid the problem, either use the WALD option in the CONTRAST statement, or use GLM parameterization (PARAM=GLM option) in the CLASS statement.
